What do I do with the bachelor’s degree I have?
And the fight in my brain to figure out which one it is
So you finished college with a degree (yay) but kinda sort of wasn’t that jazzed about the subject you’ve spent thousands of dollars on obtaining, have no idea what to do with it, but now must find a way to market yourself and the degree to land and full-time job
Does this sound like you?
I’ve always had my eye on many things at a time. Maybe that is the Gemini in me, but whether it is a hobby, book, tv show, or too many tabs on my laptop, both my hands have always been tied.
I started to think that this would somewhat bleed over to college career decisions when we had to pick majors for college applications. My Spin-the-Wheel of majors included: Global Studies, International Relations, Marine Biology (ha), Undecided, and Communications.
I thought that even if I did start with something now doesn’t mean that I can’t change it.
Fast forward to when I took a left turn and went to City College.
I was finishing up my GE’s and my counselor noticed that I had yet to pick a major to transfer out of. At this point, I was still tossing between Global Studies, now possibly History, or Film Media. But I thought to myself again:
Even if I did start with something now doesn’t mean I can’t change it.
So I asked her what’s one of the fastest majors to transfer out of in and she said Sociology.
So that was my major when I started at UC Berkeley.
I never ended up changing my major from Sociology
I thought to myself:
Even if I get a degree in a certain major, there are statistics that show there is a small chance you’ll actually have a career in the degree you have.
To be honest, it was easy enough, I enjoyed what I was learning, and I was not nearly as stressed out as 99.9% of my peers. And besides, I’d rather spend money on something that I enjoyed learning.
But what the hell was I suppose to do with a Sociology degree?
There are so many things that I want to do in my life. I want to be in Entertainment. I want to continue blogging. I want to travel the world. There are so many options which are great! But now it is November 2021. Next month will mark two years since I’ve graduated from college and I have yet to have landed a career job.
What do I do with what I have and where do I even start?
