Brick Wall Sunlight

My room is the darkest in the house
The window is wide
But faces across a brick wall
with glimpses of everyday people
and everyday things

The light in my room remains artificial
blurring the line between when is night
and when is the day
I sit itching for when a moment will come
a glimpse of pure sunlight will
rain down on the white linens
and fill the room with its warmth

I’ve always had the brightest room in the house
Dawn would wake me before any alarm
and I would peak at the sky underneath watery eyes
to cast a fist at why it brightens my dreams from the inside
and stir me alive

But as I write this
the sunlight enters my room
from 11:30-noon
if the skies are clear
I will turn off my lamp
and turn my view
to the sun peering down from below
between two buildings
to uncast its shadow

I take a moment every time
I get to see the day

It fills me with regret
that I never appreciated it enough
That I could spend the whole day
needing no other light but the one God created

I wish you could see it
it feels so bright
It is a highlight that I love
living a new york city life.
