Your therapist has a really good point. The one time I went to therapy they said something similar. I stammer more around my family (because of the heightened anxiety to not stutter) vs strangers or friends.
My grandma actually noticed when I talk about family that I tend to stutter more. So personally perhaps it just induces more anxiety and stress that makes me stutter more. It is something I am still figuring out.
